Hrivnak, William J.

William J. Hrivnak, 80 years old and the Patriarch of his family, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 after a short period of declining health. He was born February 1, 1938 in Clairton, Pennsylvania to John F. and Annette (nee Senik) Hrivnak. He graduated from Turtle Creek High School (Pennsylvania) in 1955. He married his wife Patricia (Pat) Fabyanic on December 22, 1956; she survives.

He had many nicknames over his 80 blessed years, including Slim, Harvey, Uncle Willy, Popeye, and the Real Mr. Classic (funny story there). He was affectionately known to all who knew him as Pops. His adoring children also called him The Lawman, and they loved and respected him and his wishes until the very end.

Pops retired from General Motors Fisher Body in Elyria, Ohio in 1984 and also served as a volunteer fireman for Elyria Township. He was a member of St. Lad’s Club, Lorain; Eagles Aerie #431, Elyria; and the Slovak Club, Lorain.

Pops was a lifelong Cleveland sports fan, although he did throw in the towel a year ago on the Browns. When deciding which team in his home state of Pennsylvania to switch his allegiance to, and knowing his wife Patricia is an ardent Steelers fan, he chose the Philadelphia Eagles (he couldn’t possibly root for the Squealers!). He got to see his newly adopted team win the Super Bowl this past year.

He also spent many an hour watching the Indians on mute on the TV, while listening to the radio broadcast, because that’s how he liked to catch his ballgames. His kids will cherish the memories of listening to the Indians on the radio with Pops in the garage while tinkering on projects. Pops also loved doing his crossword puzzles, and tracking lottery numbers – he was always so close to landing the big one, but was off by just one number (more great stories there!).

He loved golfing, and passed along his love of the game to his kids and grandkids. Some of the grandkids earliest memories are of golfing with their Papaw. He’d be the first to tell you it’s never too late to hit that hole-in-one, a feat he accomplished at 73 years of age.

With all he did in life, he was most proud of his family and cherished spending all the time he could with them. If there was a family get together happening anywhere, Pops was there with his iconic Cleveland Browns beer cup, which had faded from all the years of use.

His loving wife Patricia stood steadfastly by his side throughout their 62 years of marriage, which included 6 kids in 6-1/2 years (no twins!) and was holding his hand to the very end. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: John “Randy” Hrivnak, Elyria Township; Mick (Valerie) Hrivnak, Elyria; Ron (Kathy) Hrivnak, Columbia, SC; Deb Hrivnak, Wooster, OH; Bill (Kim) Hrivnak, Elyria; and Brenda (Jay Kimball) Hrivnak, Collins, OH. His family also expanded to include 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne Takarchek, of Bellefonte, PA; nephew Walter Reese; numerous other sisters and brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Albert and Helen Fabyanic, great-granddaughter Maycee Rae Kokis, brother-in-law Peter Takarchek, and niece Tamara “Tammy” Reese (nee Takarchek).

Family and friends will be received Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M at Wyers Bollinger Funeral Chapel, 2900 N. Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio. A service by Pastor Charles Keesee will follow at 4:00 P.M. at the Funeral Chapel. All are welcome to join the family for food and fellowship at St. Lad’s Club Pavilion, 4221 Clinton Avenue, Lorain, OH 44055 at the conclusion of the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the causes that was near and dear to Pops’ heart – the Vietnam Veterans or the Wounded Warrior Project. Online condolences may be made at Wyers-Bollinger.com

We love you Pops! You will be in our hearts forever! We were blessed to have you!
