Joe Katkic passed peacefully on Thursday July 11, 2024. Joe lived his life with loyalty, honor, charity and devotion. He was born in Lorain, Ohio, to parents Stephen and Mary (Sudetic) Katkic. He was a lifelong resident of Lorain and a graduate of Lorain High School. Joe suffered a childhood bout with polio, but his resilience and determination allowed Joe to work at the Thew Shovel factory in Lorain for decades. Retirement allowed him time to work on his backyard garden and play golf when possible. Joe was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, which is devoted to doing charitable works in the community. His weekends were also filled with cheering for the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns.
Joe will be deeply missed by his sister, Mary Jane Gessner of Santa Ana, California, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Mary Katkic, as well as his brothers, Marc, Edward, Steve Jr., Charles, and Rudy and sisters, Ann Holowecky, and Katharine Gill.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 20 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria, with viewing at 10:00 a.m. and a Mass at 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by gravesite services at Calvary Cemetery, under the direction of the Wyers-Bollinger Funeral Chapel. A reception will be held afterward at the Church hall. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to an animal rescue charity or to Catholic Charities.
The family wishes to send a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Avon Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake for their care and compassion, as well as the Sacred Heart Chapel Wednesday evening prayer group.
