Joseph T. McGhee

Joseph T. McGhee, 73, of Elyria, passed away Monday, May 9, 2022 after a lengthy battle with kidney disease. He was born June 30, 1948 in Lorain to parents, Hugh and Esther (Davlin) McGhee.


He graduated from Elyria High School in 1966. An outstanding athlete, Joe was selected to the All-Ohio Baseball team his senior year, becoming only the fifth player in school history at the time to achieve the honor. He remained an avid fan of the sport throughout his life.


Joe was retired from Aztec Chemical in Elyria, where he was employed for over 20 years. He was kind, generous and friendly to all that he met. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and he proudly supported and celebrated their achievements. Joe also enjoyed watching old movies.

He is survived by his daughters, Kelly (Jeff) Edleman and Terri (Brad) Kernya; son, B.J. (Jessica) McGhee; sister, Jean (Dennis) Thomas; brothers, Hugh Daniel (Nancy) McGhee and Robert (Lora) McGhee; grandchildren, Dylan (Jessica) Vavzincak, Haley and Grant Edleman, Marissa McGhee, and Devan (Lindsey) Kernya; great-grandchildren, Alice Vavzincak, Sophia and Jack Kernya, and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Karen in 2021.


The family would like to thank the staff, past and present, at Fresenius Kidney Care in Sheffield Village, as well as the nurses and STNA's of Lifecare Center of Elyria for their kindness, caring, and compassion while taking care of our father.
